What is traditional Thai Massage?
Thai massage is a beautiful form of bodywork that has gained great popularity in the West over the last 25 years. The massage incorporates a traditional combination of acupressure, energy meridian work, and Thai yoga stretches in order to ignite the senses and balance the chakras of the body and mind.
What are some of the benefits?
Great stress relief – Eliminates tension – Calms the mind and nervous system – Unlocks blocked energy that needs to circulate around the body – Restores better posture – Increases energy output and general health and wellbeing- Reduces anxiety and helps combat depression.
How is it received?
Thai massage is received on a Thai matt or futon rolled out on the floor. Cushions are used for support at times but it is mostly free flowing and continuous. The client wears loose baggy clothing due to the stretching aspects of the massage. No oils are used but some ointments can be applied if needed.
Due to the nature of Thai Yoga Massage, Thai Therapy, Nuad Phaen Boran, Nuat Thai, which are very similar in nature and origin it is very important that your practitioner is very well qualified. Always look for good qualifications and schooling.
Nadis
Are channels through which, in Indian tradition and spiritual science, the energies of the physical body and the subtle body are said to flow. The nadis are said to connect to special points in nerves and veins and can also be considered as nadichakras.
Sen Sib
Or the main 10 energy lines sometimes referred to as Sen Sib “Sen meaning line”, Sib meaning 10 are the heart of Thai massage. Like Anatomy Trains is to Tom Myers Sen Sib is the roadmap of the physical and spiritual body according to Thai massage history. Many great documents from the past (King rama 11 A.D) were destroyed but what remained was carved on marble plates at the famous Wat Po temple in south Thailand Bangkok.
The lines pretty much philosophise that within each line flows energy to the nadis, this energy can also be referred as Prana also known as life force, the name also lends itself to Ayurvedic medicine from India where this massage actually most likely originated. As the lines are fairly complex I have not outlined them on my website but you can get this information from me by ordering charts designed by Kam Tye Chow and Asokananda which may take up to 3 weeks to receive.
